Formula For Conversion Of CGPA Into Percentage (Banaras Hindu University)

Hello everyone.

As far as I understand, every institution has its own formula for the conversion of CGPA to percentage. Hence, the following only applies to those students who have completed their undergraduate/postgraduate/etc., level of education from Banaras Hindu University.

BHU uses the following formula for conversion of Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) to its equivalent percentage:

Percentage = (10 * CGPA) - 4.5

Example:

If your CGPA at the end of your course is 8.31, then:

Percentage = (10 * 8.31) - 4.5

            = (83.1) - 4.5

        = 83.1 - 4.5

= 78.60

Hence, a CGPA of 8.31 is equivalent to 78.60 % .

This formula is clearly printed on the backside of your last semester's grade card. Here is an image.

The document reads that the "...CGPA shall be computed up to 2 place[s] of decimals (truncated at the second place)".

Truncated simply means that the percentage is not rounded off. For example, a percentage of 78.678 is NOT rounded off to 78.68. You will have to write your marks in percentage as 78.67.

But given the fact that BHU already calculates your CGPA (and SGPA for that matter) up to two decimal places --- 8.31 and NOT 8.312 --- you don't have to worry about the quoted rule.

I completed my B.A. Hons in History from BHU in 2021, so I am a reliable and first-hand source. The above image is a scan of my own sixth-semester grade card.

That's all for today. Hope you have a nice day.
